ST. BARNABAS OPENS 11 NEW ASSISTED LIVING SUITES
Suites are latest addition to growing health system's offerings

Gibsonia, Pa. - June 28, 2010 - St. Barnabas Health System this week is opening 11 new assisted living suites at its main campus along Meridian Road. The new suites are an extension of The Arbors at St. Barnabas, Gibsonia Campus, and are located on the courtyard level of the same building as St. Barnabas Nursing Home.

The new suites include one- and two bed-room options as well as efficiencies. Each suite has its own kitchenette, bathroom and laundry unit as well as closet space and individually controlled heating and air conditioning. The courtyard-level assisted living area and suites are elegantly decorated in rich tones of red, blue and gold and create a warm ambience through chandelier and trough lighting. Three meals are served daily in a beautifully decorated dining area. Residents receive daily assistance from nurses and personal care attendants while still maintaining a high level of independence and privacy. Residents also are able to participate in recreational activities, worship services and off-campus trips. Because The Arbors is in the same building as St. Barnabas Nursing Home, residents are also able to easily use the skilled nursing facility's clinical offerings, such as rehab therapy and access to physicians. Plus, assisted living residents are able to easily transfer between assisted living and skilled care as their healthcare needs change.

With the new assisted living units, the total number of licensed assisted living beds operated by The Arbors at St. Barnabas is 240. The Arbors has locations at St. Barnabas' Valencia campus as well as Gibsonia. Last fall, St. Barnabas introduced assisted living on its Gibsonia campus, opening 16 suites on the third floor of the St. Barnabas Nursing Home building.

The growth in St. Barnabas' assisted living is just one way that St. Barnabas is growing and expanding to meet the needs of the Pittsburgh region's seniors. A plan of one-level carriage homes for retirees, The Woodlands at St. Barnabas in Valencia, Butler County, was created in 1998. New Woodlands homes continue to be built, with 135 carriage homes currently existing and an additional 8 homes set to open by the end of June. Over the course of several more years, as many as 300 carriage homes will be built on St. Barnabas' Valencia campus.

"With so many organizations struggling financially, St. Barnabas is fortunate to be in a position of financial stability and growth due to careful planning and management," said William V. Day, president of St. Barnabas Health System. "As the number of retirees in our region increases, we are creating new housing options and services to fulfill their needs. St. Barnabas has existed since 1900, so we provide a strong background of stability and expertise to our customers."

Earlier this year, St. Barnabas bought a financially troubled existing housing plan just off Route 8 in Richland Township. The White Tail Ridge development includes 71 homes with capacity for up to 90. The White Tail Ridge carriage homes range from two to five bedrooms and include first-floor master suites, contemporary kitchens and first-floor laundry rooms. Several have second-story bedrooms and lofts. The White Tail Ridge homes are being offered as rental homes to the community at large, regardless of age, as well as to seniors desiring to be part of St. Barnabas Health System.

A year ago, St. Barnabas opened the Crystal Conservatories, a glass-enclosed swimming pool and banquet facility in Valencia. The swimming pool is available for aqua therapy, aqua aerobics and swimming. The entire complex can be rented for parties and social functions.

These new developments occur as St. Barnabas is about to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Village at St. Barnabas, a 252-apartment complex that was Western Pennsylvania's first retirement community. The Village has been renovated and upgraded over the years to stay current with the needs of today's seniors.
