Hampton Township Teen Winds 2007 Kean Idol Vocal Competition
Maddie Georgi has competed in all four years of fund-raising contest

Gibsonia, Pa. - April 2, 2007 - Madison Georgi, a 14-year-old from Hampton Township, won both the Audience Choice Vocal Award and the Greg Maggio Judges Choice Vocal Award at the 2007 Kean Idol Vocal and Dance Contest at the Kean Theatre on Friday, March 30. The contest was in its fourth year and Georgi's accomplishment marks the first time a contestant has won the favor of both the judges and the audience during finals. Georgi has competed in all four years of Kean Idol competition.

Georgi is a ninth grader at Hampton High School and the daughter of Bruce and Renee Georgi. She performed "Take My Hand," a song she composed as a fund-raiser for autism research. Georgi and 19 others qualified to compete in Friday's championship round by being selected by the judges in preliminary and semi-final rounds. All told, 92 vocal acts competed in the 2007 Kean Idol.

As winner of the Audience Choice and Judges Choice awards, Georgi received:

  • 12 hours of studio time from Audible Images Recording Studio. (Six hours for each category.)
  • A portrait session with award-winning photographer Rick Armstrong, which includes an 8 by 10 print.
  • A portrait session with Jamie Hall Photography that includes an 8 by 10 print.
  • A feature story in Northern Connection Magazine.
  • Two trophies - one in each category.

The judges for the Championship Round selected five contestants out of 20 for the audience to vote on. Also in the top five were:

  • First runner-up (by judges' vote) - Lisa Castor, 38, of Charleroi.
  • Second runner-up (by judges' vote) Natalie Schaefer, 17, of Gibsonia
  • Vida Malcanas, 35, of Mount Washington
  • Chelsea Carmella, 16, of Cranberry Township

    Judges at the championship round were Johnny Angel, lead singer with Johnny Angel & The Halos; Ricky Vila-Roger, a professional actor and singer; and Jay Dudt, co-founder of Audible Images Recording Studio. The master of ceremonies was Bob Logue, former KDKA personality. The 2007 Kean Idol Vocal and Dance Talent Contest was sponsored by The 2007 Kean Idol Vocal and Dance Talent Contest is sponsored by Northern Connection Magazine, Tom Henry Chevrolet, Armstrong, Schellhaas Funeral Home, Audible Images, Subway and MIACO Media.

    The purpose of Kean Idol was to raise money for the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund while providing area residents with a fun singing and dancing competition. The contest was mirrored after the popular TV shows "American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars." Beginning in mid-February, the contest consisted of five rounds of preliminary vocal competition, two vocal semi-finals, the vocal championship round, two dance preliminary rounds, and a dance championship round. Jim Roddey, former Allegheny County chief executive, emceed many of the rounds. Although there was no entry fee, each contestant was asked to sell 10 tickets. Sponsorships, raffles, DVD sales, and flower sales also contributed to the success of the Kean Idol.

    The Kean Idol grossed $32,146 for the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund. In 2006 alone, the Free Care Fund provided $5.84 million in aid to poor and low-income patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas.
