Jon Kolb Hits the Course for St. Barnabas Charities' Golf Open
Gibsonia, Pa. - May 7, 2009 - Jon Kolb, four-time Steeler's Super Bowl champ, will be the celebrity golfer as St. Barnabas Charities hosts its 22nd annual Golf Open on Monday, June 1 at Butler Country Club.
The fund-raising event's morning field will tee off at 7:45 a.m., following a continental breakfast. The afternoon field, in which Kolb will participate, will tee off at 12:45 p.m. The cost to golf in either field is $375 and includes 18 holes of golf, use of carts, lunch, course beverages, unlimited range balls, a cocktail reception and awards dinner.
Kolb was born Aug. 30, 1947 in Ponca City, Okla. He attended Owasso High School, where he earned all-state honors during his senior year. He attended Oklahoma State University where he started at center. While at OSU he was named All-Big Eight in 1967 and 1968 and All-American in 1968. Kolb was drafted by Pittsburgh out of OSU in 1969, and he played with the Steelers from 1969 to 1981. He started at tackle in 177 games and was widely regarded as one of the strongest men in the NFL, protecting Terry Bradshaw's blind side and opening holes for running backs Franco Harris, Rocky Bleier and John Fuqua. After a 13-year career as an offensive lineman in the NFL, Kolb became a member of Chuck Noll's coaching staff and was the Steelers' strength and conditioning coach until 1991. Today, Kolb works at Sharon Regional Health System. He is also the defensive coordinator for the Grove City College football team. He and his wife Deborah reside in Grove City, Pa. with their three sons.
During the event's awards dinner, Bob Bruce of WPXI-TV will serve as master of ceremonies. Those attending will also be invited to participate in live and silent auctions featuring prizes such as an autographed Penguins jersey, Oakmont Country Club golf package and Steelers tickets.
Proceeds from the 22nd annual St. Barnabas Charities Golf Open benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund. In 2008 alone, the Free Care Fund provided more than $4.3 million to patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas who would not otherwise be able to afford their care. Since its founding, the golf open has raised more than $1 million.
